A private Virtual Local Area Network, VLAN is create between the offices. Packets can not leave this VLAN, nor can packets outside enter this VLAN. Thus, packets can only travel between the offices. In the above diagram the VLAN is extended to travel hundreds of miles making it a private state wide network.
All packets travel on fiber at the speed of light at (186,000 miles per second).Therefore, for packets to go 400 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles it takes less than 10 one thousandths of a second (or 10 milliseconds). That's 20 times faster than the 220 milliseconds it takes for a satellite video picture to be transmitted to your TV. Offices connected between northern and southern California can literally exchange data in less time than the blink of an eye.
